Should have to put slight pressure on the slide stop to get the lower pin to slide in. No tools needed for assy. Then check your work by putting gentle pressure with the punch on the lower pin. It shouldn't budge.

You don't need to be pounding on them, but sometimes a couple taps are needed the first time the pins are removed. The block will remain in this configuration until the firing pin is moved back into the cocked position, at which time the block pops back into place.
