In the last two decades, Western Europe has witnessed the upsurge of various so-called populist political parties and politicians. In Italy, the media-mogul WebbCas Mudde, probably the most famous scholar on populism, wrote an article on the “populist zeitgeist” 15˜years ago ( Mudde, 2004 ), in which he claimed that “populist discourse has become mainstream in the politics of western democra-cies” (p.˜541). A˜decade and a half later, this prophetic vision seems more timely than ever.
